short film: outdated

Director and Editor

“Outdated” is a short documentary that insightfully addresses to why it is still worth shooting with film in this golden age of digital era.

We are currently living in the digital-photography golden age where high quality photos are easily taken by professional DSLR cameras with wide range of models, amazing features and multiple functions. Moreover, with camera built-in even in your smartphones that fit just right into your pocket, anyone can conveniently capture and edit such stunning pictures. As Kai Behrmann wrote in his article “5 Reasons Why Film Photography Is Not Old-Fashioned” published on The Art of Creative Photography “Modern society is marked by an abundance of visual imagery; advances in digital technology has democratized photography. Richard Buckley sums it up in his foreword to Nathan Benn’s book called Kodachrome Memory: American Pictures 1972-1990:

“BY GIVING MEANING TO EVERYTHING, WE GIVE NOTHING VALUE.”
— Richard Buckley

That observation is certainly true. So, why would anyone still even think about taking photos with such an “outdated” medium like film when they have faster, smarter and largely more accessible options available? Are we merely nostalgic? Or is it because being retro is trendy right now?
